Although sunglasses are considered to be more of a fashion statement than functional eyewear, there are studies that show that high-quality sunglasses can protect the eyes from sun damage and help prevent a host of eye problems. Ultraviolet rays are invisible to the eyes, so it becomes very difficult to notice the damage done to the eyes before you experience problems with your vision. The following list will point out the dangers of not wearing protective eyewear when you are outdoors.

The Risks:

  • You increase the chance of developing harmful conditions such as photokeratitis, pterygia, pingueculae, macular degeneration and even cataracts. All of these are eye conditions caused from sun damage. Even exposure to the sun’s high-energy visible radiation can increase the long-term risks of developing macular degeneration.
  • Children are more susceptible to damage to their retina due to exposure to the sun, as their lenses are more sensitive to Ultraviolet rays. Spending too much time outside without protective eyewear can lead to development of vision problems later on in life.
  • Wearing sunglasses while driving during a sunny day is essential, as it drastically reduces the glare of environmental light and increases your range of vision. You will be more able to identify dangers on the road and avoid accidents when your eyes are able to see effortlessly.
  • Wrap-around sunglasses help in shielding the eyes against wind and debris, keeping it free from dust and other irritants. Not using protective eyewear during windy days can cause harmful problems like dry-eye syndrome.
  • In extreme cases, too much sun exposure to the eyes can cause cataracts of the eye which create blindness. This is especially important to consider with children because they aren’t fully aware of the way their actions can affect them later on. Also, direct sunlight onto the eyelids could turn into skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma.

Make sure that you purchase your sunglasses from reliable stores and get them checked for UV protection before you make your payment.
