Book Your Vacation Ahead of Time

Whether you’re staying in a hotel or camping, when traveling with children, you need to book ahead, warns Rough Guides. Spontaneous travel is best left to singles and couples, as searching for accommodation on arrival is much more difficult for families and can be a nightmare when you have hungry, tired children waiting.

Check Your Passports

If you’re leaving the country, you should make sure everyone has an up-to-date passport. Remember, children’s passports only last for five years and renewals can take up to four weeks.

Pack a First Aid Kit

A first aid kit is essential for any trip and should include, at a minimum, bandages, a thermometer, aspirin (or a substitute), any necessary prescription medications and allergy medication, advises USA Today. If you’ll be traveling along winding roads, you should also pack a physician-approved anti-motion sickness medication.

Keep the Kids Entertained

Pack plenty of activities to help combat boredom during the journey. One great way to do this is with surprise bags for each child containing games, activities, small toys and maybe a snack, recommends She Knows.

Set Off Early

No matter if you’re driving or flying, it’s best to set off early to make sure you arrive to your destination or the airport on time. For trips with a long plane ride, leaving early also gives children the chance to relax before the flight, says Delicious Baby.

Prepare for the Climate

Children will be more comfortable if they’re wearing clothes suited to the weather conditions. This includes packing sun essentials like sunglasses, sunscreen, hats and other protective gear appropriate for your destination.
