As a parent, you will be familiar with that sinking sensation that you have forgotten something when you are about to leave for a trip. Making a checklist in advance is a great solution, and with so many safety issues to consider at the beach, from crashing waves to burning sun, it is extra important.

Beach Checklist for Babies and Kids

  • Floaties, lifejackets, or inflatable life rings. Young children and infants who are still learning to swim need a flotation device to keep their heads above water at all times. If you want to avoid PVC, choose a dense foam mat or polyethylene floaty, like a noodle.
  • At least two swimsuits. Taking more than one bathing suit means that your kids can change after swimming but still play near the water. This is particularly important for infants, who are at a higher risk of hypothermia.
  • Organic beach toys. You can now find beach toys made from materials like corn instead of petroleum. These are biodegradable and free from BPA, phthalates, and other toxic chemicals, making them safer for kids. Plus, if pulled away with a wave, these toys will break down in just 2 to 3 years, which is much less than the 500 years needed for ordinary plastic.
  • Beach towels. Opt for organic beach towels if you would prefer a material free from chemicals.
  • Organic sunblock with SPF of at least 15. Kids over the age of 6 months need to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen on all their exposed skin. Organic products are best, as they contain no harmful chemicals, are scent-free and hypoallergenic, and only use zinc as their active ingredient.
  • Sustainable water bottles. Taking plenty of water is essential for avoiding dehydration and sun illnesses. Buy biodegradable bottles in case any get lost in the sand.
  • Umbrella. Create a spot of shade with a UV beach umbrella to protect your skin and stay cool.
  • Light clothing that covers the skin.
  • A favorite pair of Real Kids sunglasses.
