Summer is sizzling and we hope you and your family are out enjoying  the great weather and healthy activities. Sun safety is essential to enjoying your time outdoors and staying healthy. You can’t have a good time at the beach if you are sunburned or your eyes are sensitive from sun exposure! It really is simple to be protect yourself from harmful UV rays with these sun safety tips from The American Cancer Society:

Slip on a shirt. Clothing (especially UPF rated) is the best protection for your skin.

Slop on some sunscreen. Be generous when applying full spectrum sunscreen. Experts suggest a shot glass amount of sunscreen to fully protect skin from UV damage. Most people use significantly less than that. So don’t be stingy! Stock up on quality sunscreen and apply it liberally.

Slap on a hat. A wide brimmed hat will help protect your eyes from sun damage as well as the sensitive skin on your face and the back of your neck.

Wrap on sunglasses to protect both your eyes and the delicate skin around the eyes from UVA and UVB damage.

Why don’t you adapt this mantra in your family? Whenever you head out the door remind your kids to SLIP – SLOP – SLAP and WRAP. Teach your kids that this simple routine and practice it every time you head out the door. It won’t be long until this routine becomes second nature. Set the mantra to a simple tune and getting sun safe will actually be fun!
