While most people are aware of the harm UV rays can have on their skin, only one in six people in the U.S. wear sunglasses when they’re exposed to the sun for a prolonged amount of time. However, sunglasses are essential for protecting the eyes from permanent damage in the future. This summer, make sure your family is protected from the dangers of sun exposure by using the following the tips.

Stay Out of the Midday Sun

UV radiation is at its highest around midday, explains InSight Eyecare. Whenever possible, stay indoors during the late morning through mid-afternoon.

Keep a Spare Pair

Make sure everyone in your family has a spare pair of sunglasses at home or in the car. This way, their eyes will stay protected even if their favorite shades are lost or broken.

Use Sunglasses on Cloudy Days

Overcast skies don’t mean UV rays are any less of a risk, especially during the summer. Don’t skimp out on sunglasses on these days!

Wear Large Shades

Protect your eyes and the skin around your eyes as best as possible by choosing a pair of sunglasses with large lenses and wraparound frames. Such precautions are particularly important for young children who have very sensitive skin.

Choose Polarized Lenses

Polarized lenses are great at reducing glare produced by reflective surfaces. Don a pair whenever you’re driving, and choose this type of sun protection for kids if they’re going to be partaking in water sports or participating in activities near water.

Make Sure Sunglasses Provide Proper UV Protection

MSN Healthy Living states that your sunglasses should provide 100 percent UV protection in order to lower your risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Remember that dark lenses don’t mean they’re better or more sufficient at protecting your eyes.
