Everyone at Real Kids Shades would like to congratulate Meikayla Mixon, winner of Prevent Blindness America‘s Most Beautiful Eyes Contest! In addition to receiving the title of this year’s Most Beautiful Eyes, the 12-year-old from Arizona was awarded the grand prize of a $10,000-educational scholarship, provided by Marchon Eyewear for the third year running, at the Prevent Blindness America Annual Awards Banquet held at the Conrad Hotel in Chicago on November 7.

“Our family has long had a passion for helping those with vision issues,” said Meikayla’s mother, Lorie Crabtree. “In fact, we heard about the contest through our work with Guide Dogs of the Desert. We’re glad to have been able to raise awareness about the importance of healthy vision, especially for kids. And, we are thrilled about receiving the scholarship for Meikayla!”

The nationwide contest took place earlier this year, providing parents of children up to the age of 17 the opportunity to submit a photo of their kids online to enter them in the contest. The first round of voting took place on the Prevent Blindness America Facebook page, which produced the state-level winners. Each participant who received the most votes in his or her state received a pair of Real Kids Shades sunglasses and a copy of the new book by Beth Kobliner Shaw and Jacob Shaw, “Jacob’s Eye Patch,” which teaches children the importance of good eye health, and advanced to the final round of voting for the chance to win the national title. Meikayla’s beautiful eyes were chosen by a panel of celebrity judges that included Larry King from ORA TV, Curt Menefee from Fox NFL Sunday, performer Barbara Eden, and author and journalist Beth Kobliner Shaw.

This year’s effort was a huge success, generating almost 50,000 votes and helping to educate the public on importance of eye health and the blessings of good vision. Real Kids Shades was proud to once again sponsor the Most Beautiful Eyes Contest, along with Eagle Eyes® Optics, Marchon Eyewear, and Watlers Golf, and would like to again extend our congratulations to Meikayla!
