Light Colored Eyes? You Could Be at Greater Risk

Light EyesWe’re exposed to UV light on a daily basis. Now while it may be what gives us those great tans in the summer, it can also be very damaging to our skin and our eyes, especially those whose eyes are lighter colors.

It turns out that having lighter colored eyes can actually mean you are at greater risk from UV rays. Some studies have shown that UV exposure to lighter irises may increase the risk of rare eye cancers, such as melanoma of the iris or uveal melanoma, says the American Academy of Ophthalmology. That means people with blue, green and even hazel eyes are living dangerously every time they step out into the sun without proper eye protection.

However, not everyone is aware of this fact. According to a 2014 study performed by the AAO, of the 54 percent of people in the United States who reported having light-colored eyes, less than a third of them were aware they were at a greater risk. This lack of knowledge means that more efforts are needed to educate people about the additional risks of having lightly shaded eyes.

Still, ophthalmologists recommend that everyone – no matter what eye color – wear 100 percent UV-protected sunglasses when out in the sun. Not all sunglasses meet this standard, but all the pairs available from Real Kids Shades do. Of the 83 percent of Americans who said they wear sunglasses regularly in the AAO study, less than half – 47 percent – said they check their glasses for UV protection ratings before making a purchase.

Regardless of the color of your eyes, it’s important to keep them protected with UV-blocking sunglasses like those available from Real Kids Shades. Our sunglasses are perfect for babies, children and teens, and every pair blocks 100 percent of the sun’s harmful rays.
