How to Reduce Digital Eye Strain While Working from Home

Due to COVID-19, many Americans are now working from home. And this trend may continue as more and more workers enjoy the benefits of remote working. Yet, an unintended consequence of work from home is an increased exposure to screens. People are spending more and more of their time in front of screens with fewer opportunities for breaks. This ultimately leads to digital eye strain.

Thankfully, there are ways to combat digital eye strain. Here are a few ways to get started:

Adjust your screen’s brightness setting

The contrast between your screen’s brightness and your surrounding environment can cause eye strain, migraines, and more. To keep these at bay, adjust your screen’s brightness so that it matches the brightness of your room. If you’re dealing with screen glare, then try using a matte screen filter.

Adjust how and where you sit

If you’re slumped down with your face mere inches away from the screen, then your eyes are bound to get dry and tired. Not only that, but how you sit can also impact your musculoskeletal health as well. Sit up straight at about an arm’s length away from your computer screen. Then, adjust your seat height so that your eyes are gazing slightly downwards towards the screen.

Practice the 20-20-20 rule

It can be easy to get wrapped up in your work, but your eyes need a break as much as your mind does. The 20-20-20 rule helps you do this. Every 20 minutes, look away from your screen and at an object that’s 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Doing this can help you reduce your digital eye strain. If you have trouble remembering, set an alarm every 20 minutes.

Use blue light blocking glasses

Digital screens give off blue light. While blue light is relatively harmless, overexposure can lead to sleep problems and eye strain. Blue light blocking glasses, as the name suggests, block out blue light to prevent overexposure. This means you can stare at a screen for longer periods of time without dealing with digital eye strain.

Here at Real Shades, we offer blue light blocking glasses for adults and kids alike. Check out our inventory today!
