For many of us, caring for our vision comes down to having the right prescription, and wearing our sunglasses when we go outside. But eye care goes way beyond that, and here at Real Kids Shades, we want to make sure you’re keeping your eyes as healthy and hygienic as possible.
With this goal in mind, let’s try to avoid a few common eye care mistakes.
To begin with, try to keep your hands away from your eyes whenever possible. This is especially important for children, who have a tendency to rub their eyes with dirty hands. Touching your eyes can transfer harmful bacteria to them, and also cause damage to fragile blood vessels
One thing we can’t stress enough is the importance of getting an annual eye exam.
Our eyes are constantly changing in subtle ways that we may not notice in our everyday lives. Yearly eye exams give us the opportunity to track these changes, and receive updates to our eyeglass prescriptions if necessary. During the exam, your eye doctor can also assess the health of your retinas and screen for conditions such as glaucoma.
It’s also a good idea to give our eyes a break from looking at screens every now and then.
Smartphones and computers are valuable tools, but staring at their screens for too long can cause eye strain and headaches. The blue light they emit can also make it hard to use a good night’s sleep if you use them before going to bed.
The last common eye care mistakes—and this is something that’s near and dear to us at Real Kids Shades—is not wearing sunglasses year-round!
Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t have to be warm out for the sun’s UV rays to damage your vision; in fact, snow can reflect sunlight and generate an intense glare that makes it hard to see without sunglasses. A good pair of sunglasses can protect our eyes no matter what the weather’s like outside.
