Don’t Forget Shades on Vacation – But Especially in Winter!

The sun is shining, the weather is warming up and you can’t wait to spend more time outside with your family. Beautiful, sunny days make you remember the one important accessory that may have gotten pushed in the back of your dresser drawer or lost underneath car seats this winter – your sunglasses. Although most families only pull out their shades during the spring and summertime, new studies are showing the importance of protecting your eyes from the sun all year long.

According to England’s The Telegraph, a 2009 study conducted in northern Japan found that human eyes were more likely to be damaged by UV rays while skiing on the slopes in snow-covered areas compared to sitting on the beach. Specifically, scientists observed the effects of light reflection on freshly fallen snow versus UV rays on an artificial sand beach and found that while your eyes are still harmed by the bright light at the beach, the effect is even worse in snowy conditions.

Sunglasses and SnowAs you may remember from your art classes, white reflects all light, which means that the snow-covered slopes are reflecting back all of the bright rays of the sun. This means that spending a day on the slopes exposes you to more sunlight than an afternoon on the beach, making vision protection all the more important.
