Of the many options of sunglasses out there on the market, the ones you likely hear the most about are polarized sunglasses. There’s a good reason for this. Polarized sunglasses bring many benefits, and as a result, they can better protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
Light moves in all directions, but when it hits a flat surface it becomes polarized–that is, it travels in a more singular, uniform direction. This singularity causes light to be more intense than normal, creating glare and making it harder to see.
Polarized lenses work to counteract the polarization of light. Here’s how:
Polarized lenses reduce and even eliminate glare from reaching the eyes. Unlike standard sunglasses, a polarized lens uses a special filter that blocks this intense light and protects vision. This means, for example, that if you’re riding along in the car, your eyes won’t be affected by a car driving by that is reflecting the sun’s rays. Polarized lenses are also helpful if you’re out on the water, reducing the glare from light hitting the surface of the water.
With normal sunglasses, you can still see everything around you, but with a darker tint. Sometimes that can make things too dark, especially in low light, which can force you to strain your eyes to see where you’re looking. Polarized lenses, on the other hand, are designed to enhance contrast, meaning you won’t have to strain your eyes and things will look more like they would if you weren’t wearing sunglasses.
