4 Tips for Maintaining Eye Health

Posted on Leave a comment

Healthy eyes mean a healthy life, and we should strive to keep it that way. While going for your regular eye exam is a great way to start, there are also things that we can do on an every day basis for maintaining our eye health.

Eat a well-balanced diet

Your body needs its nutrients, and your eyes are no exception. Omega-3 fatty acids are especially important, as they contribute to the health of the macula (the portion of the eye that’s mainly responsible for your central vision). By eating a poorly balanced diet, however, you’re depriving your eyes of the nutrients it needs and harming your overall vision.

Beware of blue light

Digital devices are everywhere (you’re probably using one to read this right now), so it can be hard to regulate your exposure of blue light. Nevertheless, it’s still important that you learn to take a break from your screens every once in a while. To do so, use the 20-20-20 rule: take a break every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Wash your hands

Your hands carry lots of germs, and this can be a problem whenever you reach up to touch your eyes. So, be sure to wash your hands regularly and thoroughly to avoid bacterial infections such as pink eye from occurring.

Wear sunglasses

One of the biggest dangers to our eyes is the sun. By emitting harmful UV rays, your eyes could be at risk of serious diseases such as macular degeneration, even cancer. To avoid this, be sure to wear your sunglasses anytime you’re outside, even when it’s cloudy.
